Intensivets has added to their interactive online veterinary training courses by adding three new shelter medicine training courses. These courses were designed in conjunction with PennVet and Connect4Education to help create the perfect online platform for veterinarians and veterinary technicians to advance their knowledge base and are perfect for onboarding training. There are three new courses in addition to the veterinary cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training course that is still provided.
The three new courses are:
- Shelter Medicine Disease Outbreak and Response
- Introductory Training in Shelter Medicine
- Student Shelter Opportunities
The shelter medicine disease outbreak and response course is a two hour course that is currently pending RACE approval. This course is designed for veterinarians and veterinary technicians to learn the most common diseases that may be encountered in a shelter environment and how to identify the diseases early on and minimize an outbreak. This is a great course for all shelter teams and can be used during onboard training.
The introductory training in shelter medicine is a two hour course that is RACE approved for veterinary technicians. This course is unique in that it walks students through the entire intake procedure of admitting a pet into a shelter and follows that pet through their stay to adoption from a shelter. This course helps to familiarize veterinary technicians with high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter practices. This course also emphasizes the importance of minimizing disease transmission and proper sanitation processes in a shelter environment. This course can be incorporated during new employee orientation and help to create a great base foundation of knowledge.
The third course is designed for veterinary students and veterinarians to be introduced to high-quality, high-volume spay and anesthetic principles. This course walks students through spay and neuter techniques in dogs and cats in a shelter environment. This course utilizes the Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter programs. This course is 8 hours and is currently pending RACE approval.
